Windows 7 delay: The smoking gun revealed

The root cause of Windows 7 preorder delays is uncovered

Customers who preordered Windows 7 have encountered some delays in receiving their goods. Gripe Line reader David was one of several customers to come forward about these delays. (See "Where is my copy of Windows 7?")

When I first wrote about David's gripe, it was unclear who was to blame: Microsoft, dumb luck, or the vendor from which David preordered his copy, Hewlett-Packard. At the time, HP was silent to my queries. Then I heard from a second Gripe Line reader, Rei, who, like David, ordered Windows 7 from HP to be installed on new computers.

"I've ordered three laptops from HP since July," Rei says, "all with free approved Windows 7 upgrades upon release. But, like David, the Windows 7 release date of Oct. 22 came and went with no word from HP. I tried to track my orders on the Web. But I was taken to the preorder screen."

As was the case for David, the screen Rei encountered was not forthcoming with a date.

"Finally," says Rei. "I started getting notifications a few days ago informing me that I should receive the upgrade between Nov. 12 and 26! There was no warning there would be a nearly one month delay after release until receipt of the upgrade."

Was this the smoking gun responsible for David's delay as well?

I forwarded Rei's letter to HP, and it turns out that, yes, the delay resides with HP.

"There has been a delay in shipping consumer notebook upgrade kits due to extra efforts made by HP's consumer notebook business to ensure customers will have an easy upgrade experience," an HP spokesperson told me. "HP will begin shipping consumer notebook upgrade kits on Nov. 9 and has sent proactive email notifications to affected customers."

Proactive, as in after the customers expected their orders to be filled, but at least HP is copping to the plea.

Mid-range Storage Considerations

A common misconception is that mid-range storage requirements are dramatically different than that of a larger enterprise. Mid-range storage users may require less capacity, but they have similar functionality and management requirements. This ESG paper examines mid-range storage needs and reviews a new solution that adjusts size while retaining value, performance and functionality.

Similar but less dramatic was my Apple Mac Snow Leopard experience. People who pre-ordered retail copies received them on the day of Snow Leopard release via overnight express. Those of us who got the "free plus shipping" upgrade for new systems got Snow Leopard the following week via snail mail. The difference in both cases is that the free upgraders are a captive customer base, so they can take their time since we can't very well ask for our $0 back!

I'm also still waiting on my "upgrade" from Toshiba. I got the confirmation several months ago that my proof of purchase had been accepted and that I would receive my upgrade "when it became available."
I just looked the other day at Toshiba's site and found the "track my order" button. It shows I'm approved but there is NO shipping information there. The last sentence says I "should receive the upgrade within 60 days of release or within 60 days of submittal if the submission was after the release date."
That means I may still have another MONTH to wait!!

I had the same HP experience as reported. But on Nov. 11th my upgrade arrived. So despite the 3 week delay, I did get the promised Windows 7 upgrade.

We can also blame the delivery system. My son ordered a new Alienware PC from Baghdad to be delivered to our home. The idea was to have me do the free upgrade to Win7 while he was here on leave and not chance shipping something this to Iraq. Timing was critical. Everyone refused to give me a product code to install from an upgrade disk I already had. DHL took a couple days to deliver the upgrade to USPS in St. Paul. USPS took FIVE DAYS to move the item to Green Bay, and then another FOUR DAYS to deliver the item to our home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula a couple hundred miles to the north. I had to then bust my butt to do an upgrade and install apps so our son could take his new PC with him back to Iraq.

We got the Win7 upgrade for my wife's Sony Vaio about a week and a half to two weeks after Oct. 22. We were in no hurry and that short of a wait seems entirely reasonable to me.
